Secret #3 - Recruiting

You can't select good people if you don't recruit good people.  You need an effective recruiting plan that puts you in touch with high-quality candidates, or you end up choosing the best of the least.  That's a recipe for mediocrity.  In the words of legendary football coach Bear Bryant, "You can't make chicken salad out of chicken shit."

If you want to find the best people, you have to go out and look for them, and it's not as hard as you think.  But first of all, you need to accept a simple, obvious fact.  The kind of person who will be happy and successful on your team, is probably already happy and successful somewhere else.

The problem is... happy, successful people probably aren't looking at the job ads or posting their resume online.  So you need a different method to get to the cream of the crop.  You need to develop Centers of Influence.

First, you need to determine who knows the kind of people you are after.  Placement Officers from local colleges, people in Trade Associations, or members of Professional Organizations.  For many entry level positions, anyone can be a Center of Influence.

Second, make sure the Centers of Influence you choose are people you can respect.  It's true what they say... Birds of a feather do flock together.  People who are jerks will, for the most part, send you other people who are jerks.

Third, you need to cultivate the people who send you high-quality candidates.  A good Center of Influence enjoys recommending people, and will continue to do so as long as you ask and show appreciation.
